If a tree on your property has recently started leaning — especially with cracked, humped, or freshly mounded soil at its base — treat it as the most urgent warning sign a tree can give. A new lean means the root plate is moving, and a tree that has begun tipping almost never re-anchors itself. By contrast, a gentle lean the tree has carried for decades, with a trunk that curves back toward vertical, is usually just how it grew. The whole game is telling those two situations apart — and this guide walks through how, along with the other signs that a tree is dead, dying, or quietly becoming a hazard.
Leaning trees: natural lean vs. root-plate failure
Plenty of healthy trees lean. A tree that sprouted reaching for light at the edge of a woodlot, or one shaped by prevailing wind, often grows at an angle its whole life. The giveaway is self-correction: look at the top third of the trunk. A tree that has leaned for years compensates by growing new wood back toward vertical, so the trunk sweeps upward in a gentle curve. That tree has built its structure around the lean, and it's often perfectly stable.
Root-plate failure looks different, and it announces itself at ground level, not in the canopy. Walk to the base and check the side opposite the lean:
- Cracked or mounded soil — the ground heaving up as the root plate rotates out of it
- A gap opening between trunk and soil on the leaning side
- Freshly exposed or lifting roots that weren't visible last month
- A lean that's visibly worse than it was after a storm or a stretch of soaking rain
Any of those, and the tree is in the process of falling — slowly for now, but the direction is chosen. If that direction is your house, driveway, or the kids' play area, the stakes are obvious. Keep people, pets, and parked cars out of the fall zone, and don't let anyone work under it. Then get eyes on it: a proper look at the roots, soil, and structure before anyone starts a saw. That's exactly what a hazardous tree removal assessment is for — schedule one promptly rather than waiting to see if the lean "settles."

They drain beautifully most of the year, but when spring rain or a summer downpour saturates them and a wind front follows, shallow-rooted trees can rotate out of soft sand in a single gust event. A tree that "moved" in last week's storm deserves a close look at its base this week.
The dead-or-dormant test
Every spring, homeowners across Michigan look at a bare tree in May and wonder whether it's dead or just late. Here's how to actually tell:
- The scratch test. Nick a pencil-thick twig with a thumbnail or pocket knife. Green and moist under the bark means alive; brown and dry means dead at that spot. One dead twig proves nothing — test several branches around the crown. All brown, all around, is your answer.
- No leaf-out by late spring. In this part of Michigan, if the maples and oaks around it are fully leafed and your tree is still bare in June, dormancy is no longer the explanation.
- Bark falling off in sheets. Live trees shed bark gradually; when big plates slough off to reveal smooth, bare wood underneath, the trunk tissue beneath has died.
- Heavy woodpecker traffic. Woodpeckers strip bark and drill where insects are — and boring insects concentrate in dead and dying wood. A suddenly popular tree is telling you something.
- Brittle twigs. Living twigs bend; dead ones snap clean with a dry crack.
Two or three of these together, tree-wide, means you're looking at a removal conversation — and sooner is genuinely cheaper than later, as we'll get to below.
Mushrooms, conks, and the rot you can't see
Fungal growth at the base of a tree is one of the most underrated warning signs, because the tree above it can still look fine. Mushrooms clustered at the root flare, or hard shelf-like conks bracketing the lower trunk, are fruiting bodies — the visible tip of a fungal network that has already spent years consuming the wood inside the roots or trunk.
That's the trap with decay: it works from the inside out. The living tissue that feeds the canopy is a thin layer just under the bark, so a trunk can hollow substantially while the crown stays green and full. The leaves are the last thing to know. This is why "but it looks healthy" is such a dangerous read on a tree with conks at its base, and why fungal growth there — not lawn mushrooms nearby, but growth from the tree or its root flare — should trigger a professional risk assessment even when nothing else seems wrong.
Michigan's usual suspects
Three problem patterns account for a large share of the hazardous trees we see across Montcalm County and West Michigan.
EAB-killed ash. Emerald ash borer has killed tens of millions of ash trees across Michigan since it was discovered near Detroit in 2002, and Montcalm County has been in the federal EAB quarantine since 2006 — meaning two full decades of dead and declining ash standing in yards, fencerows, and woodlots. The signs: D-shaped exit holes in the bark, pale "blonded" patches where woodpeckers have stripped bark hunting larvae, a thinning upper crown, and sprouts shooting from the lower trunk. Here's the part that matters for safety: dead ash gets brittle unusually fast. Within a few years of dying, an ash becomes too unpredictable to climb safely and starts shedding large limbs without warning. If you have a dead ash standing over anything you care about, get it down before it starts coming down on its own schedule.
Oak wilt in red oaks. This fatal fungal disease is why Michigan's DNR advises against pruning oaks between April 15 and July 15, when the beetles that spread it are active. The symptom to watch for is speed: a red oak that wilts from the top down in the middle of summer, browning from the leaf edges inward and dropping leaves that are still partly green, can go from full canopy to bare in a matter of weeks. A dead oak wilt tree near other oaks is also a disease reservoir — the fungus travels through root grafts to neighbors — so removal timing matters for the whole stand.
Storm-loosened maples. The Sidney area averages roughly 59 inches of snow a year, and it's the ice storms and wet, heavy snows that do the structural damage — overloading the broad crowns of mature silver maples, cracking major unions, and rocking root systems in saturated soil. A big maple that shifted, cracked, or lost a leader in a storm may stand for months afterward while the damage progresses quietly. What happens next: assessment before the saw
Here's the honest part that surprises people: a good chunk of "scary" trees don't need to come down. A long-standing lean with healthy roots may need nothing. A tree with deadwood over the driveway may just need pruning. A weak double-trunk union can sometimes be cabled and monitored. A proper assessment starts with the question "what is actually wrong here?" — not "how fast can we get a saw in it?" That's the approach that leads to the right fix, whether that's a trim, a cable, or a takedown.
But when a tree genuinely is dead or failing, waiting works against you. Dead wood gets more brittle every season, which steadily removes the safe options — climbing becomes off the table, rigging points can't be trusted, and the job shifts toward slower, more equipment-heavy staging. The same tree is nearly always a simpler, cheaper removal one year after it dies than three years after.
